DESIGNIGN DREAM MACHINES

DESIGNIGN DREAM MACHINES

The presentation of Richard Seymour’s & Dick Palm’s design firm is the inspiring film that make designers love their profession & aim to one day be able to do solo design & have the chance to work on projects like the BSA “resurrection” motorbike.

In the film we can see three projects that are in different ways showing how does the process of making a good design works. From the brainstorm session of the Tefal kettle & food processor; the long hours of concept sketching & sculpting of the Bantam motorbike; to the deep research of the Indian culture for the development of a proper scooter that suits the Indian’s market needs. All around, everything refers to the creation & development process that design projects should go through. This is the job of a designer, to improve & create better concept for every possible object by making them suit the needs of the consumers or users.

The resurrection of the BSA motorbike project was the most intriguing for me, with the interest of history being re-told. It is quite a task to make a bike for a brand that has been inactive & want to reawake their product in a very competitive market. To make up the skip in time from an old model to a brand new late-tech one is quite a test, which means analyzing the features of the brand, extract its personality but not its features & creating something new but still holding to that BSA characteristic.
The Tefal kettle & food processor was a timeline from the point zero of a project to the final stage of presentation to the client. The issue shown with this project was to show how projects can be born but may not live to be sold, this one in particular was presented as an innovative design but the Tefal did not proceeded to a production & distribution stage.
For the Indian project there was a motorbike company that wanted Seymour & Palm to make a new scooter for the Indian market. The bike had to be endurable, able to carry as much as possible & also be a family media of transport. This project was mentioned to highlight the importance of research. Problems that back in London they would never ever though off they solved thanks to the documenting of the conditions of their futures products context.

This video was a relaxing & enjoyable story. I enjoyed it very much.
